This week a massive file-sharing service partially headed by hip hop producer Swizz Beatz -- singer Alicia Keyes' husband -- was shut down by the federal government for copyright infringement. Beatz, who has worked with Jay-Z and Chris Brown, is the chief executive officer of the company, MegaUpload, that allegedly raked in millions without getting permission from record companies and artists to swap their intellectual property.
You would think that as a creative artist himself Beatz would show more respect for copyrights. Of course, I guess for many leeches pretending to be businessmen, nothing is more persuasive than greed.
The money and success of the company seemed to make leaders more and more brazen. After quietly earning nearly $200 million over the last couple of years, the company basically asked for trouble and inspection by circulating a high-profile commercial for its services.
The Megaload commercial featured will.i.am, Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, Ciara, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and others, who told their fans that they used Megaload and loved the quick speed for sending and receiving files. The commercial soon went viral on YouTube.
Well, one of the companies that manages and owns the works of several of those artists was not amused. Universal Music Group had not consented to the marketing campaign and demanded that YouTube remove the video. That prompted Megaload to sue the music group for copyright misrepresentation,
Soon after, Megaload attracted the wrath of the FBI. That's gotta be karma.
Four Megaload executives were arrested, including the owner/founder, known as "Kim Dotcom." All the arrestees live outside of America. American citizen Swizz Beatz was not arrested. Why? He should be.
As CEO he's well aware of the services the company provides and he is using his fame and musical connections to make the company even more popular so they can rake in more money -- at the hands of artists who should be paid royalties for every song or movie shared.
I'm standing by for justice, i.e., the arrest of Swiss Beatz.
